Keeping God’s Law for Successful Nation Building

According to the Economic Development Board (EDB) in an article on “A great place to live”: “Singapore is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, with consistently low crime rates, a transparent legal system, and a reliable police force supported by proactive citizens.

Our residents enjoy political stability, low crime rates, and excellent healthcare, education, housing, recreation, and transport options. Some of the world’s most beautiful countries are also just a short flight away from Singapore. The standard of living in Singapore continues to be affordable and is rated among the best in the world.”

One critical success factor for Singapore being one of the safest countries in the world is how well the Singapore government upholds the law. One example is the upholding of capital punishment in Singapore. In an article by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on The Death Penalty in Singapore—A Safe and Secure Singapore: “The Government has the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of Singaporeans. Our tough laws, including the death penalty, and strict enforcement of the laws, have made Singapore one of the safest places in the world.”

We thank God for our founding leaders in upholding with strict enforcement of the laws. As a result, Singapore is a safe place to live. This has brought justice, peace, and prosperity to our nation.

God has given us righteous laws and if we abide by these God-given laws which will ensure success in our nation building. In Deuteronomy 4:5-8 “See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it.  Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”  What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?  And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

God has given the Israelites righteous decrees and laws. If Israel and all other countries keep these decrees and laws, this would bring about safety, peace and prosperity.

God has further instructed the Israelitess to be careful in keeping the laws and teaching them to the following generations. Deuteronomy 4:9 “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

It is critical that our founding leaders place a great importance of upholding the laws, it is also critical and pertinent that the younger generations continue the conviction of keeping the laws. This will ensure continuous safety, peace and prosperity of our country.

On a personal note, we also need to keep God’s law so as to ensure our own success in life. In Joshua 1:8 “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Let us, as Christians, do our due diligence in reading and mediating on God’s word the Bible. Like the Israelites, we should read God’s word with passion and in anticipation to obey God wholeheartedly, then God will grant us prosperity and success.

There are a few things we can do to instil discipline in reading God’s word. First, we need to be faithful in our daily Bible reading. Resolve to read the Bible before your studies, or any social media. Second, be faithful in attending Sunday Worship. Third, take time to attend Sunday School and fellowships. Last, read good Christian literature, some of which are easily available in our church library and online.

Let us emulate what our Singapore government has done in the strict enforcement of the law. Let us know God’s law and decrees personally. We have benefitted from the fruits of labour of our founding leaders through decades of peace, safety and prosperity. Let us continue to keep the law and teach our children’s children on the values of upholding these righteous laws for personal success and prosperity as a country.
